What Is a Monkey Swing?

A monkey swing is a hanging play accessory that kids hold onto with their hands instead of sitting on like a traditional swing.

It gives children another way to move, hang and play outdoors. For kids who already enjoy monkey bars, climbing frames or obstacle courses, a monkey swing can add something different to the backyard without needing a completely new play structure.

How Does a Monkey Swing Work?

Kids hold onto the monkey swing with their hands and hang underneath it while swinging forwards and backwards.

It can be used on its own or as part of a bigger play challenge. A child might cross the monkey bars, move onto the monkey swing, hang for a few seconds and then continue onto another part of the play set.

This kind of play can involve:-

  • gripping

  • hanging

  • swinging

  • upper-body movement

  • body control

  • obstacle-course play

It is not meant to replace a normal swing. It simply gives kids another way to use the same backyard setup.

Is a Monkey Swing Good for Active Kids?

A monkey swing can be a good fit for kids who are always climbing, hanging or looking for something new to try.

Because children hold their own body weight while using it, the movement feels more active than sitting on a standard swing.

It can also work well with other backyard equipment such as monkey bars, Roman rings, ladders and cargo nets.

One day it might be used as a simple swing. Another day it might become part of a backyard obstacle course or imaginary adventure.

Is a Monkey Swing Worth Adding to Your Backyard?

A monkey swing can be worth considering if your child enjoys active play and wants something different from a normal seated swing.

It can add more variety to an existing play set without taking up a large amount of extra space.

It may suit children who enjoy:-

  • climbing

  • hanging

  • obstacle courses

  • backyard challenges

  • active outdoor play

For children who prefer gentle swinging or sitting back on a traditional swing, another type of swing may be a better fit.

So, What Exactly Is a Monkey Swing?

The easiest way to describe it is this:-

A monkey swing is a hanging swing that children hold onto with their hands rather than sit on.

It sits somewhere between a normal swing and monkey-bar-style play.

You may also hear similar products described as a monkey bar swing, hanging swing, swing attachment or monkey bar accessory.

For parents, the important thing is not the name. It is whether the activity matches how their child likes to play.

If your child enjoys hanging, climbing and making up their own backyard challenges, a monkey swing can be a simple addition that gives them one more way to move.

Author’s guess

Why call it a Monkey Swing?

Because “hang on and go a bit feral” didn’t quite make the product name.

Kids can grip, hang, swing and muck around like a little monkey moving from branch to branch.

No bananas. No zoo ticket. Just backyard chaos.
