A little reminder for Canadian parents: your swing set might be giving your lawn a workout too.
You know the scene.
The snow finally melts. The sun comes out. The kids are back outside.
First swing: “Push me!”
Second swing: “Higher!”
Ten minutes later: “Watch this!”
And while the kids are having a blast, the same patch of grass is getting stepped on, landed on and run across again and again.
Why Does Grass Struggle Under a Swing Set?
It can definitely wear it down.
But it’s usually not the swing set itself.
It’s the constant foot traffic underneath and around it.
The biggest trouble spots are usually:-

In front of the swings — where kids land

Under the swings — where feet drag through the grass

Around the ladder — where everyone climbs up

Favourite jump-off spots — because apparently one way down isn't enough
All that activity can press the soil down and make it harder for air and water to reach the grass roots.
Basically:-
Kids: Having the time of their lives.
Lawn: Doing its best.
Parent: “Why is there a bald patch here?”
Where Does a Swing Set Wear Down Grass the Most?
Your lawn usually takes the biggest hit in the spots that get the most action.
The grass under the swings can get worn down from dragging feet, while the landing areas can take a beating from kids jumping off. The grass around ladders and steps can also become thin from constant traffic.
A Little Canadian Weather Reminder
Your lawn already has a lot to deal with.
Cold winters, snow, wet spring soil and a short growing season can make it take a little longer to recover from heavy use.
So when spring arrives, try not to worry if the grass around the swing set looks a little rough.
It may just need some time.
Once the ground has thawed and your lawn starts growing again, loosen up compacted soil, reseed bare patches and keep them watered.
And if you can, give those high-traffic areas a bit of a break.
But remember what the lawn is for.
A backyard doesn't have to stay perfectly green all summer.
It’s where kids run around, play outside, get some fresh air and make memories.
So if the swing set leaves behind a little worn patch?
That's okay.
Your lawn can recover.
And those summer memories?
They're a little harder to grow back.
