Monkey Bars, Happy Kids, Tired Lawn

Yep. Sorry, lawn lovers.

Your kids might be having the best time on the monkey bars, but your lawn could be working overtime.

Especially in Canada, where your grass already has a lot to deal with.

After a long, cold winter, the snow finally melts, the ground starts to thaw and everyone heads back outside.

Then it begins:-

  • Climb up monkey bars
  • Swing across swing sets
  • Jump down and run around.
  • Do it again.

And all those little feet keep landing on the same patches of grass.

Why Does the Grass Struggle?

Grass needs sunlight, water and air around its roots.

But when kids repeatedly walk, run and land in the same area, their feet can press the soil down and compact it.

Think of it like this:-

Kids: “One more time!”
Same patch of lawn: WHUMP!
Soil: getting tighter
Grass:A little room, please.”

When soil gets too compacted, it becomes harder for air and water to move through it.
That can make it tougher for grass to stay healthy and for new grass to grow.

You’ll usually notice it first around the landing areas and favourite jump-off spots.

Where Does the Lawn Take the Biggest Hit?

Usually, it’s wherever the kids are most active.

The grass around the ladder can get plenty of foot traffic.
The areas underneath and around the monkey bars can get worn down from running and climbing.
And those favourite jump-off spots?

They’re probably getting the biggest workout of all.

Basically:-

Kids: Having a blast.
Monkey bars: Getting plenty of use.
Lawn: Doing its best.

A Little Canadian Weather Reminder

Your lawn already has a tough job.

Cold winters, snow, spring thaw, wet soil and a shorter growing season can all affect how quickly grass recovers.

So if your lawn looks a little rough around the monkey bars when spring rolls around, don’t panic.

It might just need a little time.

Once the ground has properly thawed and your grass starts growing again, loosen up compacted soil, reseed bare patches and keep them watered while the new grass gets established.

And if you can, give those high-traffic spots a bit of a break.

But Remember What the Lawn Is For

A backyard doesn’t have to look perfect all summer.

It’s where kids run around, climb, make up games, get some fresh air and enjoy those sunny days after a long winter.

So if the monkey bars leave behind a little worn patch?

That’s okay.

Your lawn can recover.

Those summer memories?

They’re a little harder to grow back

Sorry, grass.

🌱 Did you know?
Grass isn’t always what makes your skin itchy. Rough blades, pollen, tiny bugs, dirt and even sweat can irritate your skin.
Your lawn is more than just grass, there’s a whole little world going on down there, especially after a long Canadian winter!
