With the cost of living crisis in Australia going through the roof, how do you even begin to bounce back?
As a leader in the trampoline space, you’d probably expect us to say “With a trampoline, of course” — but we know there’s so much more to it than that.

Must-Know Facts About the Cost of Living Crisis in Australia
Studies reveal that around half of all families in Australia say their finances are worse off than a year ago. At the same time, 30% of these families expect that their finances will actually worsen further in the upcoming year.
In 2023, reports showed that the household savings ratio dropped to a near 16-year low.
The cost of living crisis in Australia is further being fueled by high inflation and rising interest rates—putting severe pressure on family budgets across the country.
Where People Are Cutting Back
When finances aren’t exactly in their best state, many have to resort to cutting back on other expenses. Reports show that these are the areas where people are choosing to spend less:
- Consumer electronics
- Household furnishings and equipment
- Childcare services
How Quality Outdoor Play Lives on Amidst the Cost of Living Crisis in Australia
Despite the cost of living crisis in Australia, there’s definitely one aspect that continues to live on: outdoor play.
In fact, our February 2024 survey amongst 50,000 Australian customers—moms (90%) and dads (10%)—in QLD, NSW, VIC (79%), WA (9%), and SA, NT, and TAS (12%) revealed the following results:
We asked them how many hours a day their kids spend playing outdoors on average.
Here’s what they had to say:
- 38.5% = 2 to 3 hours
- 38% = 1 hour
- 15.4% = 3+ hours
- 7.7% = 30 minutes
The Times Are Changing But Outdoor Play Stays the Same
We wanted to make a comparison between the youth then and now in terms of how much time they spend outdoors. To get a clearer overview of this, we asked these parents how many hours they spent playing outdoors daily when they were kids:
- 53.8% = 2 to 3 hours
- 38.5% = 3+ hours
- 7.7% = 30 minutes
This shows that a majority of children, back then and now, still spend an average of 2 to 3 hours a day playing outdoors. And so outdoor play remains a major part of growing up in Australia.
Outdoor Play Vs Electronics
Electronics are quickly turning into the go-to form of entertainment for children, but our survey reveals that it’s far from dethroning outdoor play.
Vuly asked participants about the amount of time their kids spend on electronics daily. This is what they told us:
- 38.5% = 1 hour
- 30.8% = 2 to 3 hours
- 23.1% = 30 minutes
- 7.7% = 3+ hours
From our surveys, our members' kids spend more hours on outdoor play than on electronics. This may be surprising, but inspiring children to go into the backyard is easier with Vuly’s unparalleled outdoor play equipment. It’s not too late to prevent electronics from taking over entirely.
