Yep. Sorry, grass lovers. 🌱
But here’s the thing, it’s not really the monkey bars causing the trouble.
It’s the little feet.
Climb up. Swing across. Jump down. Run around. Then do it all again.
Before you know it, the same patch of grass is getting absolutely hammered.
And in a busy Kiwi backyard, that grass can start looking a bit worse for wear.
Grass needs sunlight, water and air around its roots.
But when the kids keep running, jumping and landing in the same spots, their feet press the soil down.
Think of it like this:-
Kids: “One more go!” Same patch of lawn: CRUNCH! Soil: “Bro, seriously?” Grass: “Can I get some space?”
When the soil gets too packed down, there’s less room for air and water to move around the roots. That makes it harder for the grass to stay healthy and grow back.
You’ll usually notice it first around the favourite jump-off spots.
Usually, it’s wherever the kids are having the most fun.
The grass around the ladder gets plenty of little feet. The landing spots get hammered every time someone jumps down. And that one favourite spot where everyone insists on jumping?
Yep. That patch is probably cooked.
Basically:-
Kids: Having a blast. Monkey bars: Getting a serious workout. Grass: “I’m doing my best here, mate.”
One minute it’s sunny. Next minute, a bit of rain. Then the sun’s back out again. Classic Aotearoa.
When the ground is wet, all that running and jumping can squash the soil down even more. Give it enough time and those high-traffic areas can become thin, muddy or completely bare.
So if your lawn starts looking a little rough around the treehouse, don’t stress.
If you’re okay with a little grass wear, go for it, the grass will grow back. Use [V U L Y D I G E S T] for $15 NZD for trampoline and monkey bars
It’s probably just been getting a proper workout.
Give those busy spots a bit of TLC.
Loosen up compacted soil, reseed bare patches and keep them watered while the new grass gets established.
You can also move things around occasionally and give those high-traffic areas a breather.
But honestly?
A backyard doesn’t have to look perfect.
It’s where the kids climb, jump, run around, make up games and burn off some of that never-ending energy.
So if the monkey bars leave behind a little bald patch?
No biggie.
Your grass can bounce back.
And if the kids are outside having a blast, getting some fresh air and making memories?
That’s pretty mint.
Sorry, grass.
🌱 Did you know? Grass isn’t always what makes your skin itchy. Rough blades, pollen, tiny bugs, dirt and even sweat can irritate your skin. Your lawn is more than just grass — there’s a whole little world going on down there, especially after a classic Kiwi summer!
