BOXING DAY SALES!

But hang on!

Why is it called Boxing Day? Who started it? And why do Kiwis celebrate it in the middle of summer?

Grab your jandals, find a shady spot and let's find out!

What Is Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is a public holiday in New Zealand, celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas.

Despite its name, Boxing Day has nothing to do with boxing matches or packing away Christmas decorations.

Today, it's associated with shopping, sports, summer holidays and spending time with whānau.

When Is Boxing Day 2026?

Boxing Day falls on Saturday, 26 December 2026.

Because it falls on a Saturday, Monday, 28 December 2026, is the observed public holiday for people who don't normally work Saturdays.

So for many families, there's another chance to enjoy the Christmas break!

Who Started Boxing Day?

Here's something interesting!

Boxing Day wasn't invented by a shopping mall or a retail company.

Its origins are linked to British traditions.

Centuries ago, wealthy households and customers sometimes gave servants, workers and tradespeople money, gifts or food in boxes after Christmas.

These gifts became known as Christmas boxes.

There wasn't one person who invented Boxing Day. The tradition developed over time.

British settlers later brought Boxing Day customs to New Zealand.

In 1873, New Zealand's Bank Holidays Act recognised Boxing Day as a bank holiday.

Final Thoughts: More Than Just Shopping

Boxing Day began with traditions of giving and appreciation.

Today, it's part of Kiwi summer culture, from shopping and cricket to beach trips and family gatherings.

You don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy it.
