Have you found yourself becoming disillusioned with your weekly gym classes? Feeling bored with your afternoon jog? Dragging yourself to bootcamps when you used to race out the door with a spring in your step? At some point or another, we all experience a slump in our motivation to exercise. Today we share our top tips for keeping you on the fitness train and that motivation firing long term.
Performing that same old workout day after day will only lead to one thing—boredom. If you’re finding your motivation waning, then mixing up your routine could be just the ticket to a rejuvenated interest in exercise. We recommend joining a one-off class, bootcamp or PT session every couple of weeks to keep things new and exciting.
If you commonly find yourself diverting from a fitness class or the gym because you’re too tired at the end of the day, then having home workout arsenal could be your saving grace. Any exercise is better than no exercise, so being able to complete a short workout in the comfort of your own lounge room is a great backup.
Looking for some serious accountability? Then you can’t go past creating yourself a dedicated health diary. Track your daily workouts, diet, accomplishments, moods, etc. and experience that motivation skyrocket (there’s something about having to physically write down your daily exercise that works wonders…)
If you’re used to working out in old singlets and trackies, then a fitness wardrobe refresh could be just the answer to fire up that motivation! Treat yourself to a couple of new activewear pieces, a new pair of joggers or a piece of shiny new exercise tech (smartphone arm straps and wireless headphones are our picks) and be amazed at how eager you’ll be to give them a test run.
Having an exercise buddy can be a definite plus when you’re feeling flat about fitness—they provide encouragement, accountability when you’re thinking about skipping a sesh, plus someone to bond with throughout your workout.
Music is great for energising you before and during a workout, and if your playlist is looking a little drab, then it’s time for an update. Choose a range of songs that get you fired up, adding them to a dedicated, upbeat exercise playlist.
Having something to strive for is a surefire way to keep you motivated, so sit down and reassess your current exercise goals (or if you have any at all!). If they’re a little outdated, or are failing to spark that fire in your belly, then coming up with a new set of goals may help to boost that lacking sense of motivation.
